The problem

Software people use for eight hours, not eight minutes.

A practice management platform is the opposite of a consumer app. Nobody is discovering it, nobody needs persuading to open it, and nobody is impressed by it. It gets used all day by staff who know exactly what they came for and resent anything standing between them and it.

The design problem is density. Patient records, treatment stages, scheduling and clinical detail all have to be on screen and legible at once, without the interface turning into a wall of grey tables.

What I did

Three decisions the product hangs on.

01

Designed for speed over first impressions

Every decision was weighted towards the hundredth use rather than the first. Shorter paths to frequent actions, consistent placement, and nothing that rewards exploring at the cost of being slower to operate once learned.

02

Built hierarchy into dense data

Clinical information can’t be reduced, so it has to be organised. Type scale, spacing and grouping do the work of making a full screen of patient data scannable rather than exhausting.

03

Kept the visual language quiet

A restrained interface is a practical choice in software people stare at all day. Colour is reserved for status and action, so when something on screen is coloured it means something.
